Outline

The Marugoto A1-1 (Katsudoo & Rikai) Tutor Support Course is a paid course to comprehensively learn about the Japanese language and culture. In this course, you can self-study online while a regularly having your assignments corrected and receiving live lessons by a tutor.

■Target Learners
This is a Japanese course for beginners aged 18 years and over, who can take a course in English. Applicants living in Australia and other parts of Oceania will be given priority. 

This course is suitable for those who will study Japanese for the first time. In the Katsudoo section of this course, you can gain practical communication skills for everyday situations by listening to a lot of Japanese as you practice speaking. Meanwhile, in the Rikai section, you can systematically learn how Japanese is used in communication. The objective is to gain a comprehensive Japanese ability that includes reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Please complete one lesson every seven days.

The following support is provided by tutors throughout the course.
・1 course orientation lesson
・5 live lessons/class lessons (One lesson every two weeks)
・1 oral test
・Correction of assignments (Three Katsudoo and nine Rikai assignments)

You will also meet other students who study Japanese in the course group and live lessons! Through the group noticeboard, you can study while communicating with tutors and students that you learn with.

Participants will be selected on the basis of order of applications received, provided they meet the enrolment requirements. Priority will be given to those who match the selection criteria. Please note that enrolment will close once all places in the course have been confirmed, even if the application period has not yet ended. We recommend you submit your application early to avoid disappointment.

About Live Lesson

■Live lessons (LL)
Live lessons are offered with one tutor for 5 students. One lesson is around 45 minutes long and there is one lesson for every topic (7 in total including a course orientation and an oral test). The live lessons are based on conversations learned in the self-study materials and written assignments, so you will need to have completed the self-study for each topic before the live lesson.
Live lessons are scheduled by class. Please choose a class schedule where you can take part in all seven lessons, when you register for the course. Live lessons schedule may not be changed for any reason whatsoever.

■Oral test
The oral test is conducted one-on-one after all of the live lessons have been completed. The time slot will be decided by consultation with the tutor in charge after the course begins. The test will usually take about 15 minutes.

■System used
Live lessons and oral tests are conducted through Zoom <https://zoom.us/>. With Zoom, the lesson room can be accessed by opening an assigned URL, so there is no need to download a system or to open an account. However, the program will need to be installed for the first lesson.
The system requirements (necessary bandwidth) for the group video conference using Zoom are as follows.

Upload Speed 600kbps / Download Speed 1.2Mbps

For those who do not know the bandwidth of their internet connection, please use the following site to conduct a speed test. (This will transfer you to an external site.)

■What you need
To take the live lessons and oral test, please have the following four items ready.
1. Computer with internet connection

      ※The latest version is recommended.
3. Headset (with microphone)

Note:
・Live lessons connect learners and their teacher via the live video conferencing program Zoom. Please do not be late connecting to the call. Please understand that there may be up to a 15-minute delay, depending on the connection.
・Be sure to use a computer that is connected to the internet. Do not participate with a smartphone, as information will be shared during live lessons.

Completion Requirements

In order to receive a completion certificate, you will need to obtain an overall score of 60% or higher.  

The allocation of points is as follows.
・Study progress 45%
・Assignments 10%
・Test 10%
・Live lesson/class lessons 20%
・Oral test 10%
・Questionnaire 5%

Note:
・In order to access the test, you will first need to:  
 - Complete at least 60% of each lesson, and
 - Submit at least 60% of all assignments.
・You will need to attend at least 1 live lesson.
・If you complete all requirements, but your total score does not reach 60% , you will receive an attendance certificate instead of a completion certificate.

About Payment of Course Fee

Participants will be selected on the basis of order of applications received, provided they meet the enrolment requirements detailed in the course outline (Applicants who are 18 years and older and can take a course in English). Priority will be given to those who are living in Australia and other parts of Oceania. 
Selected applicants will be contacted by The Japan Foundation, Sydney by email with payment details. Please make payment no later than the payment deadline (April 27).

Please note that applications will be processed in order of payment date, and that applications are competitive. Your place in the course is not guaranteed until after confirmation of payment. Enrolment will close once all places in the course have been confirmed, even if the application period has not yet ended or the payment deadline has not yet passed.

As your place will only be confirmed once we have received confirmation of payment, we recommend making payment early to avoid disappointment.


Enrolment Process:
1. Complete an application form on the Minato Website
2. Applicants who meet the selection criteria will receive an email from the Japan Foundation, Sydney detailing how to make payment
3. Make payment online via Eventbrite 
(Please note that payments will be taken on a first come, first served basis. Once we have received payment from the maximum number of students, you will not be able to enrol even if the deadline has not yet passed.).
4. Receive confirmation of enrolment from the Japan Foundation, Sydney and Minato Online. 

Cancellation policy:
You may cancel your enrolment up until April 27, 2020. You are required to notify The Japan Foundation, Sydney via email in order to cancel your enrolment. Course fees will be refunded minus an administration fee of $50.

Should you need to cancel your enrolment from April 28 due to circumstances beyond your control, you will be eligible to receive a refund equal to 50% of any remaining live lesson fees (from a total of 7 lessons including the orientation and oral test, where each live lesson is calculated at $20 per lesson).You are required to notify The Japan Foundation, Sydney via email in order to cancel your enrolment. The amount refundable is calculated from the date that The Japan Foundation, Sydney receives notification of your cancellation request via email.
